Directions: The GEAR UP program requires regular survey of
students in the GEAR UP cohort. You are being asked to complete this brief
survey as an incoming or current 9th grade student during the 2016-2017
school year. Your responses will be combined with all other students who
complete the survey. Also, please keep in mind that many of the skills and
activities in the items below are things you will do over the next 4 years. It
is not expected that you will be ready for college or postsecondary training today. Thank you for taking
the time to answer these questions!
I am well aware of the services (e.g., tutoring, mentoring), activities (e.g., college visits), and benefits (e.g., scholarship, support in high school) available to me as a GEAR UP student.
A First Generation college student is someone whose parents/guardians did not graduate from a 4-year college. Using this definition, will you be a First Generation college student when/if you go to college?
Someone from my school or GEAR UP has spoken with me about
college/postsecondary entrance requirements (including 4 year college,
community college, training/certificate programs or military).
Someone from my school or GEAR UP has spoken with me about the availability of financial aid to help me pay for college/postsecondary training (including 4 year college, community college, training/certificate programs or military).
I believe I will be able to afford to attend a public 4-year, community college, or certificate/training program using financial aid, scholarships, getting a job, and my family’s resources.
I have talked with someone who is currently going to college during the last 12 months (for example, during a college visit, mentoring, as part of a presentation/activity at my school, some other setting).
